Smoking A Cigar Halfway: Smart Or Wasteful?

Posted by: Ryder Michaels  /  Category: Poker

When people debate the question of whether or not a cigar should be smoked fully or just halfway, they’re really debating whether or not there is something inherently bad about a half-smoked cigar. Whether or not a cigar is bad or good depends upon the tobacco and the wrap, not upon how much of it has been smoked.

Is this true or not? The question is bandied about an awful lot, perhaps more than is truly merited. It’s more of an academic question, really. The real answer is, of course, that smokers should smoke however much of their cigar they desire and, if someone objects, that person can smoke their own cigars halfway if they so choose. There are various reasons why this debate endures.

Smoking tobacco, whether it be from a pipe, a cigarette or a cigar, inevitably changes the taste and the character of the rest of the tobacco in the bowl or wrapper. As the tobacco combusts, it produces tar and the tobacco through which the smoke is drawn acts as something of a filter, catching particles of the tar and flavoring the tobacco. Most often, the tobacco becomes stronger and sharper as one smokes more of it.

A cigar’s flavor may change a bit because, of course, the tobacco dries out a bit as the heat from the smoke travels through the wrapper. This also gives the last part of the cigar a slightly different flavor than the first part. This is unavoidable and, again, there are no hard and fast rules about this. Some individuals will stub out their cigar halfway through and others will chew on the butt long after its gone out on its own. It’s all up to the individual and one’s own preference should be the only thing that guides their choice in this regard.

Fine cigars are not cheap and their price is justified in the quality of their tobacco and in the technique used in wrapping the leaves. Saying that one should smoke only half of a cigar is akin to saying one should only eat half of a gourmet chicken because the taste of the meat changes slightly as one approaches the bone. It is a matter of preference and little more. Some individuals will find that the cigar becomes too strong for their taste toward the end and, in these cases, it is preferable to change brands rather than to waste fully half of a gourmet cigar. There are many mild brands on the market from which to choose.

Is it Good to Remove the Band When You Smoke a Cigar?

Posted by: Brian Mallikarjunan  /  Category: Poker

One of the most relaxing and satisfying feelings is when you finally find a few moments in the day that are all your own, when you can unwind with a nice cigar. However, cigar smoking is not as easy as just grabbing a stogie and lighting it up.

Should you choose a Zippo pipe lighter for your cigar? What brand of cigar should you try first? Should you remove the band around the cigar or leave it on as you smoke?

Should they remove the band that is on the cigar or should they leave it on? While this might seem like a trivial question, you might be surprised at just how important it is. When it comes to cigar etiquette, you will find that there are certain things you should do and certain things that are considered rude. If you are only smoking your cigar at home, and you don’t have a lot of friends over, then you can feel free to leave the label on the cigar. However, when you are smoking around others who know a thing or two about cigars, you should take the band off.

Why would leaving the band on your cigar be rude? Well, the band contains as much information about the cigar as you would likely ever need to know. Those who are knowledgeable about cigars will be able to tell not only the brand of cigar, but also the approximate amount of money that you spent on it. When you have an expensive cigar and leave the band on, it can look as though you are bragging about your wealth in some people’s eyes. You can avoid the envious glares of others around you by simple removing the band and enjoying your cigar.

Since most people don’t like to brag and consider it unbecoming, you can simply remove the band. The best way to remove the band easily is by lighting the cigar and smoking it for a moment. As the heat course through the cigar, it will loosen the label and make it easy to remove. You can discretely remove the label and discard it without inadvertently offending anyone. Etiquette is very important in the world of cigar smokers, and if you want to do things right you should take the time to learn the various traditions.

Multi-Flame Cigar Lighters

Lighters have come a long way in the past few decades. The first blue-flame lighters were interesting enough but, today, there are innovative designs which are even more attractive to the eye. These lighters have two, sometimes three flames which create quite a visual display and will most certainly turn heads!

A torch cigar lighter with multiple flames has its uses and its place but offers pros and cons which sometimes make a torch with only a single jet preferable in some situations. Most often this has to do with practical considerations.

Single flame lighters have the advantages of being easy on fuel, of providing reliable lighting and of being compact. Because lighting a cigar is a complex process, one may find that these lighter’s efficiency is desirable as constantly refueling the lighter can become something of a hassle. They are available in designs which feature an elegance commensurate with smoking a cigar and they provide an even, hot-burning flame that can be directed toward the tobacco which makes lighting the stogie very easy and convenient.

The double-jet lighters are very attractive and have advantages for certain types of smoking. Those who enjoy smoking a pipe will appreciate the compromise between a wide area of flame coverage and a compact design. The lighter’s spread of flame will generally fit within the space of most pipe bowls and the fact that these jets will remain directed where pointed, even when completely inverted, makes them especially handy for lighting up a pipe correctly. The butane fuel means that there is no taste given to tobacco with these lighters.

Lighters are oftentimes chosen for aesthetic reasons and this is a concern when choosing a jet style. The multi-jet lighters are larger, obviously, and less convenient to carry around. Consider leaving the multi-jet lighter at home and carrying around a single-jet model as they have a very slim profile and slip easily into a pocket. These lighters may not be quite as flashy but a blue flame’s still quite a sight. Of course, the smell of an expensive cigar is also very attention-getting and any one of these lighters are one of the best choices for firing up a good stogie.

Zippo Maintenance

Some individuals maintain that liquid-fueled lighters impart an unpleasant taste to any tobacco product with which they come into contact. This is entirely a matter of opinion but, to remedy the situation, there are several different grades of lighter fluid on the market that advertise themselves as being free of any unpleasant flavor. For those who aren’t ready to move to a high-end butane lighter, such as a Nibo, these fluids can help mitigate any risk of ruining a good cigar or pipe.

Of all the lighter fluids available, those sold at grocery and discount stores are the most likely to give a foul, petroleum taste to tobacco. Smokers generally avoid these fuels. They are adequate for utility use but, in general, better-quality fuels also burn more efficiently which makes them a superior choice all around. Even from the aspect of keeping a lighter clean and functioning, they offer advantages in that there are fewer impurities with which the lighter may become fouled.

Refueling the lighter can be a bit tricky the first few times. Replace the fuel in small amounts and give it time to soak into the cotton. Attempting to fill the cotton with one long spray usually results in overfill which can drip out of the wick area and ooze out of the lighter case when it’s put into one’s pocket. It doesn’t take a great deal of fuel to refill one of these lighters. When the lighter has been fueled, let it stand in the open air for a while”with the lid closed”to allow any excess to dissipate. This will ensure that there is no stray fuel on the case which can irritate the skin and which can, of course, ignite when the lighter is lit creating quite a large flame!

Some individuals have moved away from liquid-fueled lighters to the high-end butane models. A Lotus lighter is among such lighters and offers a cleaner-burning, hotter flame than does lighter fluid. Still, the trademark click of a Zippo case and the timeless style of these lighters makes them perennial favorites among smokers and outdoor enthusiasts alike.

A well cared-for liquid-fueled can easily provide several generations of service. These devices are incredibly simple which is a large part of their long-lasting nature. By keeping them clean and by using high-quality fuel, one can be assured of getting their money’s worth. Remember to never substitute any other fuel for the lighter fluid called for by these lighters. This can be dangerous to both the user and the lighter itself and is certainly not safe for smoking purposes.
